There’s an article over at Gamasutra talking about a recent lawsuit. A parent of a teenager is asking for a refund of all unauthorized facebook credit purchases made by minors in the US. Instead of parenting to ensure her teenager doesn’t use her credit card without her approval, she wants laws to parent for her.

What’s more appalling is the comments. Though there are a few voices of reason essentially saying “parent your damn kids,” there are just as many people saying “freemium” games – games which are free to play but then have microtransactions – should be made illegal. The temptation to steal a parent’s credit card or lie about your age should be removed, so that parents don’t have to worry about teaching their children not to do these things.

Sigh. This prompted me to share an anecdote:

Awhile ago I was at the grocery store, and I asked my daughter to help me pick out some cereal. She said “How about this one?” and then I realized that all the sugary cereal was at child-eye-level, while the healthier stuff was at adult-eye-level. I didn’t sue, I didn’t say there should be a law against that, I didn’t even complain to the store; I thought “what a great marketing tactic!” and said to my daughter, “All the cereal down here is very sugary. They put those down here so kids will see them. Let’s read these boxes up here and find something a little healthier.” Then I put back the cereal I didn’t want my child purchasing, and helped her pick out something else. The next time we went to the cereal isle, she at first started to go for the sugary cereal, but then said “Oh yeah, we have to look higher and read the boxes!”

If I had not been paying attention and had not taught my daughter to ask before doing so, she could have grabbed some of the cereal I didn’t want and put it in the cart. If I had left her to just pick out the cereal herself, she would have picked that first sugary cereal. But I parented. First, I taught her to ask before purchasing something (and I don’t leave my credit card info saved in situations where my kids – or myself, because I’ve done that before, due to not reading fully – could accidentally purchase something). I paid attention to what she was doing, and was involved. I said no, and I taught her why, so that she can make good purchasing decisions in the future; that will help her when she’s shopping for herself one day.

The point of this is not “sugary cereal is bad, mmmkay?” Adults that want to eat the sugary cereal and adults that are fine with their children choosing the sugary cereal should be able to purchase the sugary cereal. I like games that let you play for free and then have microtransactions. I like games that appeal to kids but are fun for adults too; I like playing those with my kids. So I should be able to pay for those, and I should be able to give my kids permission to pay for those. (Let’s not even get into the fact that facebook games aren’t focused toward children anyway.)

As I said when someone bought up drugs (with “No good parent would allow their kids to interact with a drug pusher – so I guess that doesn’t need to be illegal either.”) - Think about alcohol; it’s legal for adults to buy, and legal for a parent to choose to give it to their child in most states, it’s only illegal for someone under 18 to buy it. If the child has access to alcohol (it is in their house, in their friend’s house, etc.) and their parents don’t want the child having any, it is up to the parent to prevent that. If a child has access to facebook games and their parents don’t want them paying for them, it is up to the parents to prevent that.

Yeah, that should have been 21, not 18, but you get what I’m saying. We, as a country, decided that adults – and children with permission – should be able to enjoy alcohol. That even though it may be in the homes of children or their friends, it’s up to the parents to ensure the children drink a moderate amount or none at all. That it’s up to parents to teach their children to ask permission first, and that saying yes the child can have a sip or a glass does not mean the child can empty the whole bottle. Why can so many people not use those same parenting skills when addressing things like facebook credits?

People bring up the argument that “parents don’t understand these games.” But just like anything else, if they don’t understand, they should either educate themselves or not allow their child to participate. You don’t buy a bottle of vodka and then let your child drink it all because you didn’t understand the whole alcohol content thing. Just like anything else, you involve yourself in what your child is doing, and educate your child. You don’t drop your child off at the grocery store with your credit card and no prior grocery shopping education and then be surprised if they come back with $200 worth of sugary cereal and candy. Just like any other situation in the world, YOU PARENT.

Facebook is not (and should not be made into) a babysitter, not even when combined with laws. And if you still need a babysitter to ensure your teenager does not make unauthorized purchases with your credit card, you’re doing something wrong.

I feel this is an important question to ask myself, because to write effective reviews one must understand how they will be read. A bit ago I read an article that claimed people don’t use game reviews to influence game purchase decisions (I can’t, for the life of me, find that article now). “That’s stupid,” was my first thought, “of course they do.”

Then I thought about it again. I’m always saying that the only real way to decide if a game is worth your money is to play it yourself. There are two reasons for this, and they are why, until recently, I focused only on book reviews. With games (at least modern day games), pretty everything is handed to you – the sounds, the visuals, etc. in addition to the story. Everyone experiences those in the same way, the difference is how the player feels about these things. Those feelings are unique to every individual person. While a review can tell you how the reviewer felt about the game, and how you may feel if your tastes are similar to the reviewer, it can not truly tell you how you will feel.

Books are different. With books you are handed only the story and a description of the characters, and your brain is left to fill in the rest. If I describe a character as “beautiful with almond shaped eyes,” you’re going to envision those eyes almond shaped as little or as much as possible to make the character beautiful in your mind. If we both read “Jenny pressed the ‘random’ button on the radio, pausing briefly to listen to each song, before finally settling on a romantic melody,” you’re going to imagine a song that sounds romantic to you. You may be envisioning My Heart Will Go on while I’m envisioning My Neck, My Back.

With books you basically need to be told if it is written well, if the characters are fleshed out and realistic (or at least in some way relatable if they aren’t meant to be realistic), if the story is composed appropriately, and the basic premise. Your brain will fill in the rest; with games, that isn’t the case.

The second reason is that reading reviews and watching videos of a game is a very different form of interaction than playing a game. When you read a book review, you’re doing exactly what you’re doing with a book, and it can invoke similar reactions. With game reviews and even videos, the feelings are completly different. Even though a good review or video displays the emotions of the player, again, those feelings are going to vary from player to player.

For what, then, do I use game reviews? I don’t care about proving that I was right to buy a game when I read a review of a game I already own. I’m extremely unlikely to buy another copy of something Darkstarmatryx reviewed and therefore already possesses. But one of my hobbies aside from gaming is reading. At some point it clicked in my mind; I use game reviews as a form of entertainment separate from gaming and separate from reading books but at the same time connected. I’m reading, but it’s still about video games. Game reviews – and journalistic opinions about game news, for that matter – are opinions about games and gaming related stuff, turned into an entertaining read.

If you haven’t noticed (well then, you’re not very observant) I’ve moved my blog to a new domain (IPlayGamesForALiving.com) and done a redesign (changed the theme – tomayto tomaho). If you did notice, you may be wondering why.

I’m on a journey; I’m working my way toward a goal. That goal is to be able to say “I play games for a living.” Originally, my plan was to chronicle this journey on a blog separate from my gaming blog. When I thought about it, though, I realized that it would be kind of going against my belief that knowledge should be free and easily accessible. I also realized that the game blogging and the gaming as a career would be so intertwined that it would be difficult to decide which posts go where, and I’d end up writing many posts twice and/or separating things that shouldn’t be separated.

So I decided to combine everything – my ramblings, my game reviews, the chronicle of my journey, the tools I use on the journey, etc. – on one, easy to say out loud (“s0nicfreak.net, the 0 is a zero, no it’s .net” just doesn’t roll off the tongue in quite the same way), descriptive domain.

So here it is! IPlayGamesForALiving.com is my gaming blog, where you can come to read my opinions on games and the gaming world, and also read about how I am making the journey to say “I play games for a living” (and ultimately, how I’m able to say that, and what life is like for someone that says that). Whether you’re here for the entertainment factor, you want to say “I play games for a living” yourself and are here for tips, or a combination of both, iplaygamesforaliving.com needs to be in your favorites/bookmarks.

No, that title is not mistyped. Yes, I realize this isn’t a game.

(Kindle version is 9.99)

I hate to sound cliche, but; this book changed my life. My view on reviewing games and blogging about games has been changed. My view on playing games for a living has been changed. I have been enlightened.

Before I read this book, I saw professional game reviewing as something that happened when people who lived near game magazine publishers spend long hours in an office. While this book does go over that sort of life, it reveals that this is not the only way professional game reviewing happens. My eyes were opened to the fact that there is a such thing as freelance game reviewers; that people can review from home, email in their reviews, and have them put into a magazine or on a big-name game site.

Hold on – before you go firing off those long-ready emails to EGM, OXM and IGN, read this book. While it made me aware that professional game reviewing can be more in line with the type of lifestyle I want (being at home to raise my kids, setting my own daily schedules, etc.), it also informed me on how that sort of thing really works. (Hint: spamming the places you want your reviews to appear ain’t the way.)

Whether your ultimate career goal is to work in a game magazine office, freelance from home, or even if you just want to write online reviews for the fun of it, this book has a lot of wonderful tips on how to write good game reviews. You’re not just writing to get hired; you’re writing to inform your fellow players, to share how you were moved (or not moved) by a game, to help them make wise choices with not only their money but with their more precious commodity, their time. This book helps you do that, and helps you do that well. If you want to make money doing that, this book tells you how to do that too.

The sample alone entranced me enough to get me to plunk down $9.99 for the Kindle version this book; well over my usual $2.99 personal limit I set for myself (and usually even that is a stretch, as I mostly stick to the .99 ebooks). But the insight it gave me into game reviewing and writing about games in general made it well worth the price. It’s the reason I moved my blog over here and decided to combine my already established ability to write with my love of gaming. It helped me realized that was possible.

This book touched me. Let it touch you too. And I don’t mean in a show-us-on-the-doll-where type of way.

Expressing this enragement and criticizing her writing was classified as an “attack” and a “verbal assault.” Reddit removed posts about it due to their rule about not attacking individuals. A slew of people came to her defense in “leave Britney alone!” fashion. Bioware is even considering legal action.

If Stephen King or George R. R. Martin threatened to sue their criticizers, if opinionated posts about them were removed from the internet, what would the reaction be? I’m going to bet that the criticism would be considered free speech, boycotts would happen, and the man’s reputation would be permanently marred as “the man that sued people into saying nothing but good things about him.” No one would say that book readers are acting entitled, heterophobic, or misandrist for having the opinion that something written by a man was bad. So why, then, is criticizing Jennifer Hepler not okay?

Oh yeah – because she has a vagina.

Let me guess what happened with Jennifer Hepler. Bioware needed to fulfill their Affirmative Action quota, but very few people that would help with this applied. They finally found a woman with writing experience, and with a bit of relief mixed with trepidation, added her to the writing team. Then – perhaps because they know little about what female gamers actually want and figured that if one woman says this is good then it must be right – they put her tripe into games. The result is a game that is better suited to romance-novel-readers rather than male OR female gamers, a gaming world that is set back many years by the bullshit notion that female gamers actually want this crap, and a world where women can’t hear a mean word without calling their lawyer.

Just as Jennifer Hepler has the right to suck, and Bioware has the right to keep her employed despite that, I have the right to say she sucks. In fact, since I know this, I feel have a responsibly to warn my fellow gamers before they unknowingly spend their non-refundable money on games she has sullied.

I’m certainly not homophobic (I think a homosexual option in games is great, but that it should not be pretty much forced on the player). Maybe I’m entitled. I’m certainly misogynistic – how can I not be when bullshit like this pops up? But I feel we ARE entitled to speak our opinion about writers and we ARE entitled to a good game for our money. We ARE entitled to writers that can understand and relate to their audience. So hopefully this fiasco, which has already driven this bitch off twitter, will also drive her off the internet completely and then hopefully out of video games. And guess what Hepler – I have a vagina too. I ain’t jealous of yours.

Don’t like what I said? So sue me!

There’s been a lot of talk about ending the used games market lately, and rumor has it that the “next xbox” will block used games. While that’s horrible for the people that like to save 5 or 10 bucks on physical games, I think it’s great.

From the game makers’ point of view, buying a used game is exactly the same as pirating. They went through the work of making the game, and then you come into possession of the game without the game makers seeing a cent of your money. It’s even worse than piracy for them in a way; when you pirate, you may buy the game if you like it. But if you buy used, you most likely aren’t going to go buy it new no matter how great it is.

For the customer, used games are a form of deceit. Customers think they are doing the right thing by buying a game instead of pirating. The used game is right there in the store, next to the new game but costing a little less. Many people think they are supporting the game industry by buying used; but the reality is that they are only supporting the stores that sell the used games. These stores give a person $2 – $5 for a game, slap on a $45 or $55 price tag and then put it next to the $50 or $60 brand new game.

A few companies – and a lot of people – are saying blocking used games is unfair to custumers. Customers should be able make a few bucks off games they no longer want and save a few bucks on games they do want, they claim. Now it is well known that I believe customers should be able to make money off games – but not when that money is given to the customer or an outside company rather than the game companies. It’s fair for customers and game companies to compliment each other in ways that make both money. It’s not fair to take money out of the game companies’ pockets and instead put it in the customers’ (or GameStop’s).

And fairness aside, let’s look at this logically. If the game companies don’t make enough money, they can not continue to exist. If they don’t exist, their customers can not exist. No one can make or save money on good games if no one can afford to make good games.

Not that I’m claiming that used games are bringing an end to the games industry; used games have been around as long as games have been around, and the industry has survived. And things like digital distribution, dlc, microtransactions, etc. are likely to bring an end to the used games industry long before the used games industry has the chance to hurt the games industry. I’m just looking at what is fair for everyone rather than what is fair to only the customers or only the used games sellers. Imo it is fair to play a game, and if you think it is worth money, give the makers of the game some money.

If you want to save some money while still supporting games, buy digital. But buying a game that is already used when you could buy it brand new for just a few bucks more, or the same price digitally – or even less if you watched the digital sales – isn’t fair to the customer nor the game makers. And putting on blocks to prevent the lie that used games are fair is completely fair, because the customer has the option to not buy any of the products if they don’t like the blocks.

Note: This is a review of the beta. The final product may or may not differ.

Until recently, I wasn’t much of a PC gamer; I mostly stuck to consoles. However, Warcraft III was one of the pc games I was excited about. I bought it at launch, and for a short time, played it quite a bit.

But that was 10 years ago. I don’t remember much about how to play Warcraft III, and I was never very good at it anyway. I never played the DotA mod. But apparently Valve didn’t consider that an issue – or maybe they just wanted a fresh view on it? – and they let me play Dota 2.

Unfortunately, the game seems to assume you’re a DotA player. I was thrown into the game with no instructions, no tutorial, not even a manual (though perhaps that will be remedied when it is actually released). I stumbled around and found a familiar symbol – a gear, which the whole world has apparently agreed means settings, for some reason. Inside I found the controls, but with little idea of what was going on – What’s a group? What do the abilities do, and how do I use them once I learn them? What the hell is a Glyph? – they were of little use.

I thought things would become more clear once I started playing the game. But just figuring out how to get into the game was confusing. In the process of figuring it out I closed a chat, which saddened me because it was an active chat, and now I’m not sure which it was nor how to open it again. Eventually I figured out that you must click under the servers where it says “Inactive,” because clicking there will switch them to active and therefore be one of the servers from which you will choose a game. Or I should say, from which your client will automatically choose a game. The only games you get to choose from – aside from inviting a friend or a fellow chat participator – are 3 “Top Live Games.” And don’t think you can click on those to see more details, nor expect a “Do you want to join this game?” confirmation, because clicking just makes you join the game.

Before you join a game, make sure you go to the bathroom, put a drink nearby, etc. because you’re going to be sitting there for about 50 minutes. And that first 45 minutes or so are going to be spent grinding. But I’m getting ahead of myself – I didn’t realize that until after playing 2 games.

When I finally got into a game, I still had no idea what was going on.

I thought I was beginning to have an idea of what was going on by then. Surely the only reason the last game had taken so long was because I didn’t have the slightest idea what was going on, right? So I started another game. This team was strategizing through the chat – but they were using jargon I was not familiar with. My requests for clarification were ignored. So I stuck with what had worked in my first game – just go beat up the enemies. I headed towards the other team’s base, and was met by an enemy player. With my newfound skills, I attacked – and was killed. “It’s gg already!” someone cried, implying that I had just single-handedly lost the game.

I pressed on. I died some more. I got yelled at some more. “How do you get into a beta without knowing wtf you’re doing?” was one of the yells. Eventually I said back “well if no one will help me stop being a dumbass, I guess I’ll just keep being a dumbass,” and stopped trying to win. The combination of not knowing wtf was going on, my team being full of assholes, and my ass hurting because I had been playing for nearly 2 hours by that point forced me to just want the game to be over. We won anyway, despite the cries in the beginning of me having lost the game, and despite my giving up. It was at that point that I realized that it didn’t much matter what I did. All that mattered was which team managed to grind the fastest and level their skills to the max the quickest in that first 50 minutes. While there can be a bit of strategy involved in that, it can also be done with practically no strategizing and no interaction whatsoever with other playable characters. The final 5 minutes are spent destroying the slower team’s towers; and since they’re slower at grinding, they are weaker than you and/or out still grinding and can’t really stop you.

The graphics, while they aren’t bad, aren’t anything to write home about. They basically took Warcraft III and made it look like World of Warcraft – more cartoony. I’m not sure what they were going for. Consistency across the Warcraft series? Okay, they accomplished that. Reeling in WoW fans? I think most WoW fans like the game in spite of, rather than because of, the cartoony looks. And as for the story; if there was one, I couldn’t find it.

I didn’t fully begin to understand the game until after I found a fan-made wiki to read. If a game requires you to play a mod you may have never even heard of (I hadn’t) or read fan-written instructions, that’s poor design in my book. Maybe they will add an instruction manual and/or a tutorial mode before release, but from my understanding this game was suppose to be out last year and they’re just fine tuning. Those things should have been in there already.

Fans of DotA may enjoy this upgraded version of the mod, but it leaves a newcomer dazed and confused – and with a sore ass. You can check out the (nearly 2 hours long) video of me playing below; but be warned, it will probably be as long and painful to you as it was to me.
